Michael Serres on Stones

“Barbarians demolish buildings in order to bring the stone back to its function as projectile: wisdom builds in order to immobilize stone to appease hatred, to protect. Why do you think we have walls, towns, and temples, when we could sleep under the starts and prostrate ourselves before the horizon? We have only built to settle stones, which could otherwise fly continually in our midst. The builder’s plans barely count: the architectonic ideal exists only for representation – the point is that projectiles come to rest.”
